What is interlocking paving?

Well, the definition of interlock is to connect parts so that their motion is constrained. We think that’s a decent summary, but doesn’t quite paint a picture in your head when it comes to paving. Interlocking paving is generally made from cement, concrete or stone, and simulates the effects of cobblestone paths. This also means that it can be installed without the use of mortar or cement.

What does it look like?

When installed correctly, interlocking paving can be installed in a variety of colours, shaped and designs. Being a modular form of paving, it also means that single interlock units can be arranged to create shapes, patterns and designs in your driveway. An interlock unit can come in a variety of shapes, with the most popular being simple geometric designs, and the more ornamental looking like flowers, shapes, stars and more. So long as a shape fits with others, there’s a good chance you can find interlock units made in it.

What is interlocking an alternative to?

Paving with interlocking can be used virtually anywhere, from your driveway to your walkways, and is a relatively low maintenance form of paving which can be used in any application you may use bricks or concrete for.

What is interlocking good for?

When installed properly, the whole driveway or walkway is a unified, bound whole, but is also created with individual stone or concrete bricks. This gives the paving the ability to transfer loads and stresses by an arching or bridging of the units involved, spreading the load over a larger area of the driveway. This means that your paving will support heavier loads, allow heavier traffic over it, and last longer than anything other than reinforced concrete. While a normal concrete driveway may bear about 2000 psi, interlocking will bear up to 4 times that amount! This means that it will break down far more slowly, and require less replacements and maintenance to the surface of the material.

In addition, this material is far more flexible than other forms of paving. This means that if you live in area where seismic activity is common, an interlocking driveway will likely last you far longer than standard concrete owing to it’s ability to change and contort in accordance to seismic contortion and activity.

Interlocking stone pavers is also an excellent eye-grabber, as it can be arranged in irregular patterns and features coloured bricks and stones. Stylish, allowing for a variety of designs and hues, and made of quality, durable materials, interlocking is one of the best choices for your home and driveway pavement.

How do you maintain interlocking pavers?

This one always makes our customer go: huh? In order to repair your interlocking, all you need to do is replace the broken or stained portion with a new, easily replaceable piece. It’s that simple. Other maintenance you should consider is fixing your paving with concrete sealer, and occasionally adding joint sand to supplant any sand which has been washed away. We recommend doing this every year or so, depending on the wear.

Why am I still hesitant?

2018’s Top Trends in Driveway and Walkway Paving

Should You Repair or Improve This Upcoming Year?

As we head into the new year, we want to consider new trends in home design and upgrades. As many people are aware, driveway and pathway paving is an important factor in the overall curb appeal of your home. For our team at VIP Paving, this means a spring repair season filled with repairs, maintenance and clean up work throughout the Greater Toronto Area, specifically Maple and North York. We understand our customers, and as we head into the new year we want to give you a little gift of knowledge. Without further ado, here are what we’ve come to reason are 2018’s top trends in paving.

1. Decorative Textures

Whereas homeowners in the past have opted for smooth, unadorned driveways, this new year will see a new rising trend in texturing. Interlocking stone, custom bricks and decorative accent finishes will be a staple in exterior design and landscaping.

Experts recommend opting for varying textures and vividly contrasting colours and patterns, picked to match your home’s exterior decoration, landscaping elements and foliage. Mix and match styles to create rustic finishes in stonework, or incorporate elements of smooth concrete for dramatic, modern flair.

2. Geometric Patterns

The biggest trend in modern exterior landscaping is geometric design, incorporating elements of light and nature. Natural stone and concrete blends ditch interlock for a more sleek and refined look, featuring heavy shapes and distinct separations between textures.

Recently featured in Architectural Digest, this ultra-modern driveway design uses concrete strips of basalt stone and large patches of permeable driveway slabs alongside portions of empty grass positioned to create the illusion of a front-yard creation. This long driveway is adorned with square patches which combine geometric patterning and natural elements for a pavement that is both functional and artistic.

3. Incorporate Lighting Elements

This time old method of adding coziness and warmth to your driveway receives an upgrade through the addition of inlaid lighting. Decorate and illuminate your driveways and walkways for extra light in your garden and patio, as well as the added safety bonus.

Inlaid lighting elements cast the light upward or downward, and can be installed within the paving as well as beneath your roof for a downward illumination of your driveway. Remember you can always opt for the more commonly used side lamps, or lanterns.

4. Landscaping Features

If you’re like us, you may be wondering how you’re supposed to add green elements to your concrete/stone slabs, and what’s the point. When adding pieces of gardening such as ferns, deep green grasses, flowering vines and natural tones, you create the illusion that your paving is natural and seamlessly integrated into your home’s exterior. Throughout 2017 we saw a moving away from standard greys, while ore and more customers requested natural beige, grey and buff colours meant to expose more of the natural foliage and landscaping around their home.

We believe this trend will continue, as homeowners add more natural varieties into gardens and outdoor décor. For this reason, we believe interlock and natural stone will be one of the most highly requested installations.

Fall Weather Garden and Patio Dream Fixes

It’s never too late in the year to fix up your garden.

Maple and North York based homeowners usually avoid taking on any major home and garden upgrades in the winter and fall months. However, this period of time can be the optimal stretch for landscaping, building and paving services. Have you been meaning to fix up your driveway and pathways? Are you looking to build a new porch? Maybe you want to cozy up by a fire pit and enjoy the last warm days. Take advantage of off-peak contractor rates and easy scheduling, and upgrade your home’s exterior before winter dawns in full. Don’t let Canadian cold bite, and keep using your outdoor space in full. For your benefit we’ve assembled some of the best off-season upgrade ideas for your garden and patio.

Update and Repair Your Paving

Many interlocking and paving companies offer off-peak rates for fall repairs. While most repairs are generally recommended for spring, an off-season installation is often a good idea if you’re on a budget and want to enjoy your outdoor space. Spruce up your paths, stone decorations or install that interlock patio you’ve been dreaming of. It’ll be there, ready to enjoy as soon as the snow melts. Install a Heat Source

Have you heard of patio heaters? They’re one of the easiest ways to enjoy your deck or backyard on those chilly nights, and area available in a variety of styles. You can purchase a tabletop design, a full-size installation or a commercial-grade heater for larger spaces.

Another excellent idea is a fire pit as a centralized heat source for family and guests. Paving companies offer fire put installation, meaning you can combine this installation with an upgrade to your paving or walkways, or patio pavement. If you’re not interested in building a stone fire pit, consider purchasing a metal one from your local home improvement store for a portable, adjustable central heat source.

Install Some Fall Décor

Are you the kind of person who needs to keep their patio open for a mental break from your home?  If you want to keep using your patio, consider changing the décor to winter-friendly items such as coverings, plastic items and lights for darkening daylight hours. Add seasonal décor to bring in warmth and climate, and to make your space feel comfortable.

Close Off the Patio

Do you have patio furniture and items which are subject to winter wear and tear? But want to keep enjoying them until the very last minute? Something of a novel idea is to screen off a section of your garden, shielding it from falling leaves, drizzle and wind. A screened-in patio or one with retractable canvases can allow you to use your patio year-round, instead of restricting activities to a few months of the year.

Benefit from these ideas and more. Take advantage of the fall, and of VIP Paving’s great pricing.
